Yutaka Kondo graduated with an MSc degree in Geophysics at the University of Tokyo in 1974 and received a Ph.D degree in 1977. He started working as a research associate at Nagoya University in 1977 and became a professor in 1992. During this period, he worked mainly in the field of stratospheric and tropospheric ozone. He participated in many international field observations, including balloon campaigns in France and Sweden and aircraft missions (NASA PEM-WEST-A and B, SONEX, and TRACE-P). He acted as a chief scientist for JAXA BIBLE and PEACE aircraft missions. He moved to the University of Tokyo in 2000. He is studying distributions and temporal variations of aerosols on local and regional scales by using advanced measurement techniques. His research interests include understanding of key physical and chemical processes of aerosol relevant to air quality and climate, especially in Asia, by ground based and aircraft measurements. These activities are also carried out within the framework of an IGAC task: Mega-cities: Asia, which he is leading.
